WATER HEATER INSTALLATION – PART 2 PREPARATIONS FOR INSTALLATION
This DIY tutorial will show how to install gas water heater. Depending on the type of install, gas or electrical water heater as well as heater configuration, installation procedure can vary. REMOVING OLD WATER HEATER
Disconnecting the gas line
Before removing old water heater, make sure to close all the water and gas valves that connect heater to installation.
Disconect gas pipe from the control valve.
Disconnecting the water line
Use drain valve to empty the heater. Use drain valve to empty the heater.
Detach vent pipe from heater.
Disconnect or cut water supply pipes. If you cut them leave them as long as possible, this will ease your job when repiping.
Remove discharge pipe from the T&P relief valve.
Detach earthquake straps and remove old heater to make a place for new one.
ADJUSTING INLET WATER PRESSURE
Measure pressure
Recommended pressure for home installation is 50-60psi. If you do not have gauge after the main water shut off valve, install one and check your pressure.
Pressure reducing valve
If pressure is too high, use pressure reducing valve to adjust pressure to recommended values.
Expansion tank
To assure constant pressure on your home instalation you can install expansion tank.
Depending whether you use push fit or other tipe of fitting or you use soldering to connect your expansion tank, pressure regulator, gauge and other water fitting and elements, prepare suitable tools and equipment required for connection type choice.
Adjust expansion tank pressure to be equal to main water pressure. Use air valve that is positioned on expansion tank to adjust pressure. You can use hand air pump to increase pressure. Or depress the valve to lower it.
